The Great Beauty

La Grande Bellezza – The Great Beauty: A truly Italian tour of Rome, re-tracing the steps of the Oscar winning film “La Grande Bellezza”, to discover ‘The Great Beauty’ of Rome.

Morning

The guided tour begins at the Passeggiata del Gianicolo, you will enjoy one of the most spectacular views of Rome and there you can also admire the noted Canon of Gianicolo, which as in the film, fires at exactly at noon. The hill is also home to numerous famous monuments such as the equestrian statue of Anita Garibaldi.

Then onwards to the romantic Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, known by all as “The big fountain”, a beautiful example of Baroque art. It is seen in the film at the beginning when a chorus of women are seen singing on the balcony of the fountain. You will then proceed towards the Park of the Aqueducts, where the actress Anita Kravos, playing the role of the ultra sensitive artist, exhibits a surreal and moving performance.

The guided tour continues onwards to visit some of the most charming and fascinating places in Rome, starting from Piazza Navona, a place visited by millions of tourists, basking in its elegance and extraordinary refinement. It is here that the main character of the film, writer Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo), asks Orietta (Isabelle Ferrari) “ What do you do in life?” and she answers dryly: “I am rich”.

Then it is on towards Palazzo Braschi, the heart of renaissance Rome and Palazzo Altemps, one of the most significant testimonies to the influence of Egyptian culture in Rome. Following in the footsteps of the main characters of the film, we will pass by the wonderful Trevi Fountain, a symbol of Fellini’s “ Dolce Vita” and an emblem of the Capital.

The tour continues with a special visit of the Capital Museums, where you will see the famous statues of the Capitoline Venus, the Capitoline Gaul and it is also the home of numerous historic collections for example: la Pinacoteca, The Castellani Collection and the Medagliere Capitolino.

Lunch in an elegant restaurant in the heart of Rome.*

Afternoon

After lunch we will have a visit, with an expert guide, of the Palazzo Spada, which is home to the renowned Spada Gallery. Then on to the Circus Maximus, Imperial Forum and the legendary Colosseum. The Colosseum is the monument which best represents the Eternal City and has been captured many times in films by Sorrentino, in fact the luxurious home of Jep looks out on to the Colosseum.

The tour continues with a walk in the lush green Garden of the Oranges, situated between the medieval walls of one of the most elegant hills of Rome, Aventino. It is here that the meeting between Stefano (Giorgio Pasotti), Jep and Ramona (Sabrina Ferilli), takes place. They look through the famous keyhole of the gates, (probably reconstructed for the film), of the Priory of the Knights of Malta, where you can see the Dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica.

The day concludes at the Thermal baths of Caracalla, one of the most magnificent examples of the imperial thermal baths of Rome, most of its structure is still in existence and is free from modern framing. Here Jep meets a friend of his who is a magician, who is trying to make an enormous giraffe disappear. In this moment his other friend Romano (Carlo Verdone) says farewell to Jep, accepting his professional failure.
